Sewing Machines- Making a Comeback?
Filed Under Home And Family | Comments Off
Kathryn Whittaker asked:
While we don’t have to rely on sewing machines to satisfy our basic clothing needs, more and more people today turn to sewing to create unique, luxurious, one-of-a-kind pieces. Every family has that hand embroidered grandmother’s table cloth or a hand-made quilt, and these pieces are as cherished as the most sophisticated haute couture creations. And instead of paying hefty sums to someone for creating these little pieces of luxury for you, you can develop the easy skills of making your own monograms, embroideries or even hand-sewn button-holes – all the little luxuries that make the difference.
With the help of a reliable sewing machine, you can instantly personalize a lot of everyday necessities. For example, you can create a set of unique napkins or add a classy touch to your bed linen and bath towels with a monogram. And with a little practice you can even alter and mend your clothes.
When choosing your first sewing machine, make sure you understand how much sewing you plan to do. The honest answer will save you money and time, as you will not pick a too complex and upscale sewing machine for your basic sewing needs.
If you plan to study sewing and even recreate expensive designer clothes to save money, you will need a more upscale sewing machine. Sewing your own clothes makes sense only if your sewing skills are high enough to recreate high-end clothes, such as suits, jackets and dresses. You won’t save money on sewing your own jeans, because the pattern, fabric, buttons, and the time spent will make this pair of jeans more expensive than any of the designer creations. However, sewing children’s clothes does make sense, because you need little fabric, and you don’t really need complicated patterns.
A sewing machine is a great investment for those who have a passion for clothes design and like to wear one-of-a-kind pieces and don’t want to limit their clothing choices to what they see in department stores. With a sewing machine and a little patience you have full control on where the pockets go, what kind of buttons you use, and where the hemline stops. You should be aware that creating clothes from scratch or even amending the existing pattern requires sewing skills and a lot of time and devotion.
A more practical use for sewing machines is mending and altering the clothes you already have. We all have that special pair of trousers or jeans that we love and hate to throw them out. Sewing machines also work great for those who like personalizing item with monograms and embroideries.
Sewing for your home is quite labor-consuming; drapes and upholstery require lots of fabric and professional-grade equipment for precise sewing notions, such as rivets and hooks. Still, you can create simple drapes and even roman blinds on your basic sewing machine. Don’t forget about quilting that once fuelled the sewing machine craze. It seems like patchwork is coming back, and many fashion designers even use elements in their collections.
Sewing machines are indispensable for crafts, which are a great way to relax and unwind after a busy day. Studies have shown that sewing reduces stress! When sewing something, no matter for what purposes, people achieve something that gives them a lasting satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Besides, hand-made simple purses, gift bags for wine bottles, tablecloths and napkins make wonderful and thoughtful gifts.
And who knows, maybe after you discover the joys of sewing, you will decide to move forward and open a small sewing business to create and sew unique pieces of clothing. Many upscale boutiques and fashion fairs feature such mini-collections often sewn on simple household sewing machines.

History of Sewing Machines

Alison Cole asked:
Prior to the invention of sewing machines, clothes and other materials were sewn by hand. Hand sewing is an art form that was practiced over 20,000 years ago. During those days, sewing needles made of bone or animal horns and thread made of animal sinew were used. In the beginning of 14th century, iron needles were invented and later in the 15th century eyed needles were introduced.
It is believed that the first known attempt for a workable sewing machine was framed in 1790 by Thomas Saint. In 1800, sewing machine was invented and by the mid-nineteenth century it became popular among the public. After Thomas Saint, various attempts were made for inventing a sewing machine. But, all of them turned unsuccessful.

Sewing Tables – Giving You the Sewing Work Space You Deserve
Filed Under Home Improvement | Comments Off
Jennifer Akre asked:
One of your most favorite activities to do is to sit down and sew. You love it so much that you have pretty much taken over the kitchen table to do it and every time there is a meal, you have to clean everything off of it only to put it all back on when you continue doing your project. There is a solution to your problem and that solution is sewing tables. One would give you a great place to do your work so you can give your kitchen table a much needed break.
The reasoning behind why sewing tables offer you such a great work space to do your sewing projects is because that is what they are specifically designed to do and nothing else. One will typically feature a spacious table top perfect for laying out patterns to mark them on fabric and then cut them as well. Some options will feature drop down leaf extensions that you can use if you need additional room to work with. If you generally use a sewing machine, you can get options that are perfect for installing your sewing machine right on. And, there are even some that even have hidden storage areas for sewing machines. Like, when you need it you can just raise your it up from underneath the table top thanks to an elevator like mechanism, then when you are done using it, you can lower it back down under the table. This is extremely convenient when you are juggling between marking and cutting a fabric and sewing it.
Along with giving you an awesome place to do your sewing work, sewing tables also provide you with a wealth of space to store all your supplies as well. Again, this is because of their design. Most will feature drawers, cabinets, and shelving where you can stow away a wide variety of things from fabric, patterns, thread, needles, scissors, books and anything else you might need while working.
Are you thinking that you might not have the space for one? Well, the thing is, sewing tables generally come with wheels, which makes them extremely mobile and able to be moved wherever you have room that day. So, if you have enough space in your living room, just roll it in there, or if the living room is being used by your kids that day, you could simply roll it in your office to work there. The wheels offer you a lot of flexibility and one furnishing that would be a smart buy and speaking of buying, a great way to find the perfect one for you is by going online for some online shopping. It really is the way to go since you can just shop from the comfort of your own home in front of your computer. When you do find something that you like and purchase it, it will then be shipped right to you so no having to worry about hauling anything anywhere.
In the end, if you want a nice place to sew, turn to sewing tables. One would definitely be a great purchase.

Sewing Machine Ratings
Filed Under Shopping And Product Reviews | Comments Off
Wendy Pan asked:
Modern sewing machines are becoming more and more complex and capable of a greater flexibility than ever. It seems a long time since the first electric machine came onto the market and made our lives so much easier. Now you do not have to worry about sewing button holes, over locking or producing complex embroidery to make your garments and furnishings look professional. Although much improved, these machines do come often come with quite a high price tag. To ensure that you are getting the technical specification that you are looking for, it is always wise to have a look at some of the sewing machine ratings that are available on the consumer websites.
Sewing machine ratings are easily found on the majority of the consumer research sites. If you already have an idea of the model name and number that you are looking for, it is easy to compare prices of the various suppliers. If, however, you are deciding to upgrade your current machine, or even buy your first, a consumer report site will give you comparisons of the specifications for each machine. There are a large variety of features available on modern machines and you would be wise to sit down and make a list of what you think would be important for yours. For example some of the embroidery capabilities of the sewing machines vary and you would be foolish to spend considerable money on a machine that will turn out elaborate embroidery if this is not something that you are ever going to use.
Also you must consider the types of fabrics that you are going to be using. Some sewing machines are not capable of stitching through several layers of heavy denim for example, whereas some will specialise in this type of heavy work. Some sewing machine ratings will be specially categorised to incorporate different features and abilities.
You will often find that the sewing machine ratings are split into price brackets. As long as you are sure that the machine you are looking at is capable of fulfilling your needs, then this may be a handy way of deciding which one is for you. Do not, however, use this type of listing as your only guide. The cheapest machine may not be the best for you and a bargain is only worthwhile if it is useful.
Another benefit of using a popular consumer research site is that fact that many of them will include reviews from the public. These are unbiased opinions and are written from experience of the various products. It is always wise to listen to the words of experience and we are lucky that now, with the internet being so easily available, we can draw on other peoples knowledge and use facilities such as sewing machine ratings to our advantage.
